Defining housing market areas using commuting and migration algorithms.Catalonia (Spain) as an applied case study.

    Get PDF
In the literature on housing market areas, different approaches can be found to defining them, for example, using travel-to-work areas and, more recently, making use of migration data. Here we propose a simple exercise to shed light on which approach performs better. Using regional data from Catalonia, Spain, we have computed housing market areas with both commuting data and migration data. In order to decide which procedure shows superior performance, we have looked at uniformity of prices within areas. The main finding is that commuting algorithms present more homogeneous areas in terms of housing prices.

Scalar Perturbations of two-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz Black Holes

In this article, we study the stability of black hole solutions found in the context of dilatonic Horava-Lifshitz gravity in 1+11+1 dimensions by means of the quasinormal modes approach. In order to find the corresponding quasinormal modes, we consider the perturbations of massive and massless scalar fields minimally coupled to gravity. In both cases, we found that the quasinormal modes have a discrete spectrum and are completely imaginary, which leads to damping modes. For a massive scalar field and a non-vanishing cosmological constant, our results suggest unstable behaviour for large values of the scalar field mass.Comment: 18 pages, 1 figure. The United States of America has been the mecca of many ventures for people with vision, goals and perseverance. The prosperity of our nation has been paved by individuals with great ambition, determination and insight, who have dared to take on a risk in owning a business enterprise. This research study was conducted to determine the characteristics and attitudes of both entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs, as well as the similarities and differences between them. For this study, a survey of entrepreneurs.was conducted through the use of questionnaires distributed to business owners located in the counties of Essex, Passaic and Hudson, in the state of New Jersey. The study of the intrapreneurs was conducted through the use of questionnaires mailed to intrapreneurs, located in different areas of the country. The research study of both groups was further supplemented with case studies of entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs throughout the nation, as well as with personal interviews with authorities in the field. The most significant finding was that entrepreneurs and intrapreneurs definitely exhibit many of the same attitudes and characteristics in carrying out their ventures, as demonstrated by their intuitiveness, their go-getterness, hard work, and the tenacity to succeed. The study also indicates that there are certain similarities and differences shared by both groups in the way they go about determining the type of ventures and in the risks involved in attaining their goals

Se hizo una revisión sobre la nueva normatividad al respecto y sobre las falencias y fortalezas del PGIRS de mosquera, dando como resultado una serie de dificultades locales y regionales, que pueden ser subsanadas si se adoptan algunas experiencias distritales y los nuevos requerimientos normativos, teniendo en cuenta su adopción y factibilidad por factores económicos, técnicos y logísticos del municipiothe progress in human activities have recently generated a serious issue is evidenced by the damage in different resources and environmental elements, affecting areas that support both large and small human concentrations, so plans have been developed to mitigate the environmental impact of solid waste resulting from these activities, each municipality nationwide have to implement a integrated solid waste management plan (ISWM) which provides guidance, instructions, methodologies and local policies for the appropriated management of waste. The accelerated development of the municipality of mosquera has done its ISWM obsolete; whereby it is necessary to generate a new plan allow generating new proposals for updating through the evaluation of the diagnostic base of municipal characteristics around the cleanliness service. Was made a review about new regulations regards and about the weaknesses and strengths of ISWM mosquera, resulting in a local and regional set of difficulties, which can be remediated if some district experiences are adopting together to new regulatory requirements, taking into account their adoption and feasibility by economic, technical and logistical factors of the municipalit

Active and Passive Security in Vehicles Seguridad Activa y Pasiva de Vehículos

With the increase in the use of vehicles for daily transportation by most people, the rate of accidents has also increased. Since the existence of vehicles, safety systems have been a vital issue and has always been taken into account – from the most basic and primary systems such as lighting, which has continuously evolved from just providing greater safety and comfort, to more advanced systems such as the combined use of the stability control system (ABS) and the lateral slide control (ESP). The safety of a car is determined from different but complementary points of view, which include the aspects of preventing and limiting damages in case of an accident for the vehicle and, primarily, for the driver and the passengers. It contemplates the two security systems: preventive and accident security, where primary (active) safety, secondary (passive), and tertiary security are contemplated. Keywords: Security, Passive, Active, Terciary, Vehiculo. An investigation into the use of metal nanoparticles and their oxides as antimicrobial agents

    Get PDF
PhDNanotechnology is concerned with the study of processes and applications at the nanoscale (10-9 m), with objects that are generally smaller than 100 nm. Within the biomedical field, the use of metal nanoparticles and their oxides as antimicrobial agents is gaining attention. In this study, the potential antimicrobial activity of thirteen different nanoparticulate metals, oxides, carbides and nitrides was examined. These were generated by thermal plasma technology. Initially, ten different bacterial species/strains of clinical significance were subjected to in-depth antimicrobial screening, which included the determination of minimum inhibitory and minimum bacteriocidal concentrations. The nanoparticles that demonstrated the greatest potential as novel antibacterial agents were, in descending order of activity: Ag > CuO > Cu2O > Cu > ZnO with effective concentrations from 100 to 2500 μg/ml. Ag and CuO nanoparticles, alone and blended, along with the salts of both elements were further examined in time-kill assays. Nanoparticulate Ag (100 μg/ml) was able to reduce microbial populations to zero within 2h. While, nanoparticulate CuO required higher concentrations (> 1000 μg/ml) and longer times (up to 4h) than silver to reduce microbial populations to zero. Blends of Ag and CuO nanoparticles were shown to be superior than when used alone, with reduced concentrations and time required (approx. 50%). Nanoparticles alone were not shown to be superior to that of their corresponding salts. Antimicrobial activity in the presence of serum was not reduced. Nanoparticulate TiO2, which lacked antimicrobial activity in the absence of UV light, was shown to possess significant antimicrobial properties when irradiated with short wave radiation. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy (ESEM) and - 3 - Scanning Ion Conductance Microscopy (SICM) were used to examine toxic effects of nanoparticles on bacteria. These revealed CuO nanoparticles to cause a greater physical change to bacteria when compared to Ag. Following nanoparticle incorporation into epoxy resin and polyurethane, the antimicrobial activity of the resulting polymer-nanocomposites were examined. Both polymers were shown to exhibit antimicrobial properties. Ion release was shown to be more marked from materials containing CuO nanoparticles. Nanoparticle biocompatibility using skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal cell lines was also investigated. CuO was shown to be generally more toxic than Ag to eukaryotic cells
